Favoring the rich color of gold, Verdura manipulated its form to create the illusion of a wide range of materials and textures, evoking the likeness of rope, ribbon and fabric. In his whimsical Target design from 1940, Verdura re-imagined the burnished holes of the woven target as brilliant diamonds pierced with steely, white gold arrows. Millicent Rogers and Dorothy Paley (later Hirshon) each owned the brooch and matching earclips, an appropriate emblem for two women who never missed the mark.
