Growing up with an exotic garden at Villa Niscemi in Sicily, Verdura later become an amateur connoisseur of plant life, incorporating favorite species in his jewelry designs and miniature still-life paintings. Encyclopedias of flowers lined his library at work and served as frequent references for his sketches.

Verdura adapted the first Hyacinth bracelet from one of his earliest creations – the Lily Bracelet. The latter design was originally featured on Doris Nolan in the 1938 film, Holiday, and on Marlene Dietrich a year later in publicity stills for her film, Destry Rides Again.
