In 1940, Linda Porter commissioned Verdura to design a cigarette case as a gift to her husband, Cole, on the opening of his Broadway show, "Panama Hattie." Taking inspiration from the musical’s title, Verdura copied the weave of his own Panama hat, crisscrossing strips of gold. Throughout his career, Verdura would create over twenty cigarette cases for his dear friend.
